Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival
Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival
Australia's only film celebration of speculative cinema; a multi-focussed event uniting fans and filmmakers in their love for sci-fi/fantasy narratives.
The primary aim of The Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival is to create a community hub for a diverse, progressive collection of film visionaries, from both the Australian creative sector and our contemporaries all over the world. A not-for-profit organisation driven by a passion for the science-fiction genre and the vast perspective it affords storytellers, the festival seeks submissions from feature and short filmmakers, students, music video makers, documentarians and experimental film artists. The festival seeks out the works of first-time directors; celebrates retrospective film culture; and, engages audiences with the filmmaking creative process via in-depth panel discussions. Local filmmakers are also engaged in online sessions that expose them to global audiences and provide training in on-camera interview techniques and promotional support in the competitive festival space.
Our program offers a unique platform for filmmakers of all skill levels. In addition to screening the films, we engage with communities to ensure Indigenous cultures and traditional elements of many international societies are represented in our screening roster. Our festival held the Australian Premiere of Shaheed Ameen's SCALES, the first U.A.E. sci-fi film directed by a woman; Kirsten Carthew's POLARIS, a Canadian feature steeped in Indigenous culture; and, held the World Premiere of the Australian film THE GREEN WOMAN, from transgender filmmaker Kestra Nebula.
